Nationalities Photography Contest Entries

<img500*10:http://elftown.eu/img/drawing/11812_1120375140.jpg>

Remember to number your entries, and separate them with the <hr> tag.

0. [sequeena_rae]
Example entry:
The bear is wearing traditional Welsh costume, and the other ornament is Merlin or Merddyn Emrys.
<img200*0:stuff/.welshcomp.jpg>

1. [shotokan_gal]
Fish and chips!
<img200*0:stuff/sg_fishandchips.jpg>
Very English ;)
(naturally, click for larger)

2. [Hedda]
A Swedish midsommer May-pole
May-poles used to be erected before May and there used to be fires on Midsummer. But the fires didn't look that good on Midsummer as it already was warm and very light. So the fires moved to May, and the May-pole to Midsummer. This pole is two weeks old. It was green as it should on Midsummer. The building behind is Herrgårn (www.linkmeet.com/_Herrgårn).
More photos and link on http://www.linkmeet.com/_May-pole
<img200*0:stuff/maypole.jpg> (Of course it somewhat breaks rule 5)

3. [Lady of Lore]
The U.S. Blend of cultures to create a unique one
This chior is made up of people from all over the world, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Mexico, Japan, etc and they can come together in schools to sing in chior together to sing Christmas Madrigals in several languages including one in Korean. It is through the combining of everyone and the acceptance of people from the world that makes up the "American" nationality. There is no specific physical appearance of nationality that is American, all the varieties compose it. Without it we are nothing.
<img200*0:http://elftown.eu/stuff/swords.jpg>

4. [Jitter]
The Greek Islands, Sun, blue seas, cyan skies, white houses and friendly people! Typical Greece ^_^
<img200*0:stuff/Skopelos_HOTELVIEWpanoramic.jpg>

5. [Atayemi]
Llandudno - North Wales. Full of seagulls, fish and chips, rock, Punch and Judy shows and a beautiful clear sea! And of course..signs with Welsh writing on them! :)
<img200*0:stuff/npcataywales.jpg>

6. [Magdalena Snow]
Mount Susitna: Anchorage, Alaska; United States.
While I may be from the United States, I'm also from Alaska, and we're known to be a different breed. This picture illustrates how even Alaska's biggest city nestles comfortably in the heart of nature. Alaska, as well as the United States as a whole is still a growing frontier.
<img200*0:http://elftown.eu/img/drawing/73235_1153718545.jpg>

7. [dew_farie]
Ever been to Louisiana?
I am not sure this picture really needs a whole lot of explaining.
<img200*0:stuff/C%3ADocuments%20and%20SettingsMelissaMy%20DocumentsMy%20PicturesNephews%202Hillybilly%20Jason.jpg>

8. [Ocean Soul]
Castle
I didn't want to submit the typical beer and leather pants photos :P So, this is something that also represents Germany: castles and half-timbered houses.. lots of trees and nature.
<img200*0:stuff/burg_fachwerk_by_OceanSoul.jpg>

9.[Endless_Findings]
A part of me
Snow, hockey, familly...what more can I say it's part of who I am. Proud to be french-canadien with all the typical heritage I could ever want...
<img200*0:http://elftown.eu/img/photo/116561_1153960526.jpg>

10.[5thwitch]
North and South
From what I see on TV I think Italy presents a distorted image of what it really is, there's a lot of confusion between the north and the south, so different in culture and landscapes. we feel it, and you can see it...
<img100*0:http://elftown.eu/img/photo/167230_1152713799.jpg> <img100*0:http://elftown.eu/img/photo/167230_1152714194.jpg>

11.[spincrus]
- First thing that pops into someone's mind when Turkey is mentioned is, for some reason, all those stuff from the Ottoman era and anything that has to do with Islam. Well, I was going to challenge that view at first, then I said to myself, "why even bother?" and went ahead with more traditional stuff.
- The first picture is from inside the Hagia Sophia. You can see both Greek Orthodox Christian and Ottoman-style Islamic decorations at the same spot, together with tourists. Quite a contrast I'd say.
- Second is the Great Blue Mosque.

2006-06-27 [iippo]: Oooh, awesomeness. I like this contest. :)

2006-06-27 [sequeena_rae]: Yay ^^

2006-06-27 [Charybdis]: Whee! A vict- um, entrant! >D

2006-06-27 [sequeena_rae]: Damn. The medication has worn off XD

2006-06-27 [Charybdis]: *twitches*

2006-06-27 [sequeena_rae]: *injects*

2006-06-27 [Charybdis]: Nuuu! ;-; I had a blood test yesterday, I don't want another injection yet! xD

2006-06-27 [sequeena_rae]: XD Tough, I need to restrain you somehow! XD *has never had a bloodt test and will never have one*

2006-06-27 [Charybdis]: *flails* // Why not? o_O

2006-06-27 [sequeena_rae]: *straps down* >_> XD // Because I refuse to have it done :P

2006-06-27 [Charybdis]: *wonders how that might be interpreted* xD // It's hardly traumatic, just a pain in the butt since you have to fast for half a day and then get up at some ungodly hour because it's first come first served at the clinic :P

2006-06-27 [sequeena_rae]: *doesn't answer that* XD // Nope, no thank you. I'm not having any foreign needle in my arm.

2006-06-27 [Charybdis]: >D // I have to have it done three more times in the next few months, so I don't have much say in the matter anyway x)

2006-06-27 [sequeena_rae]: Hehehee >) // o.O rather you than me XD

2006-06-27 [Charybdis]: Look! A flying dumbbell! *points* // :P

2006-06-27 [sequeena_rae]: Err, wtf? *turns to see* // good luck XD

2006-06-27 [Charybdis]: *uses distraction to wriggle out of straps and run away* // I'll survive, don't worry ^^

2006-06-27 [Nite_Owl]: If I ever remember to bring a camera with me someday, I might enter this :P my hometown's not particularly interesting....well....I guess if you've never been to the southwest deserts before but...I need a pic of a joshua tree :D hehe

2006-06-28 [Charybdis]: Good luck! I hope you can enter ^^

2006-06-28 [sequeena_rae]: Damn :( // Good!! // Wheee, owlie you must enter ;___;

2006-06-28 [Nite_Owl]: hahaha I don't think it would be anything compared to where you live, sequeena XP deserts arnen't really all that spiffy....

2006-06-28 [sequeena_rae]: All you have to do is find something to represent your country ;)

2006-06-28 [nokaredes]: I think that people always think that where they live is boring :P So, post something from the desert :P

2006-06-29 [sequeena_rae]: I love where I live ^^ Mind you, not where I live personally, but the surrounding area is nice.

2006-06-29 [Nite_Owl]: :P Someday I'm hoping to visit or maybe even live in Ireland or Wales--"maybe" being a key word there lol (^,^) Owlie can dream though hehehe

2006-06-29 [sequeena_rae]: Aww, I hope you can :P

2006-06-29 [Nite_Owl]: Of course, it depends on just how it is there. Like the cost of gas and houses and such....I heard from Dana that in Finland gas costs over $7 (O,o) and I thought ours was bad....

2006-06-29 [sequeena_rae]: It depends on when you catch us :P

2006-06-29 [Nite_Owl]: eee.....if I did live there, I could visit teh Sequeeeeeena!! *huggles* eeehehehe

2006-06-29 [sequeena_rae]: Not really, I'll be in America ;)

2006-06-29 [Nite_Owl]: bleh, but you'll be too far away either way :( Someday I shall meet teh Sequeena, someday when we won't even recognize each other lol

2006-06-29 [sequeena_rae]: Lol! Most probably

2006-07-05 [Panda-monium]: hmmm, I is thinking

2006-07-06 [sequeena_rae]: :O! First entry! ^^ And yes, so very english! :D

2006-07-06 [shotokan_gal]: Complete with woman giving me a strange look for taking a picture of the chippy! Hehe X)

2006-07-06 [sequeena_rae]: XD I had the same look for taking a photo of a fairground ride XD But I love it! It captures England perfectly :D

2006-07-06 [shotokan_gal]: Yay, thanks! :) Might submit a second sometime, though haven't decided on which yet. Spent two hours or so scanning photos today, so the brains a tad frazzled... (the library scanners are evil)

2006-07-06 [sequeena_rae]: Ouch, I remember having to do that, it takes forever =/

2006-07-06 [shotokan_gal]: Mm particularly with this one. 45 pictures should've only taken about half that (got two films back today - and haven't even scanned them all yet).

2006-07-06 [sequeena_rae]: Wow o.o good luck I say.

2006-07-07 [shotokan_gal]: *phew* finally scanned, and now uploaded, my Edinburgh photos. *doesn't want to scan anything else for a while* ><

2006-07-07 [someelf]: My entry will be here soon when I get home anyway XD Someday :3

2006-07-09 [sequeena_rae]: Oh wow, that's a nice entry [Hedda] :D Your may poles are completely different to ours xD

2006-07-09 [sequeena_rae]: XD let me guess, those loops are to hang people? Or were?

2006-07-09 [Hedda]: They are rings of fertility... Guess what that pole driven into the soil is meant to look like!

2006-07-09 [sequeena_rae]: Ah phallic symbols XD *slaps head* May pole duh >_<

2006-07-09 [shotokan_gal]: o_O

2006-07-09 [iippo]: Hmm, should it go through the rings then? Unless they're the fertile round things of male/may.

2006-07-09 [Nite_Owl]: haha nice entry :P Not nearly as bad as Japan's animal of fertility, the tanuki (O,o) it has the largest testicles in the world hahaha LOok it up on wikipedia, it's rather amusing, if more than somewhat disturbing

2006-07-09 [Jitter]: Tanukis for the win ^_^ I had a tanuki avatar once!

2006-07-13 [Lady of Lore]: Is mine alright? I am not wanting to appear as the arrogant american, I felt this was a better portrayal of a uniqueness of America. If it doesn't work i can change it to something else.

2006-07-13 [shotokan_gal]: I think its a great idea to portray your nationality :) at least you aren't continuously bashing it like everyone else seems to be!

2006-07-13 [someelf]: Aaaah >_< *Forgot to make a picture at home* -goes make a note-

2006-07-13 [sequeena_rae]: Wow, very nice [Lady of Lore] :D

2006-07-13 [Lady of Lore]: Thanks XD It was so much fun to sing so many different songs for Christmas, it really gave me a taste for other cultures music (playing cletic music in background, lol)

2006-07-13 [sequeena_rae]: Like [shotokan_gal] said, it's nice to see someone being proud of the mixed nationalities in America ^^

2006-07-13 [Nite_Owl]: yisyis it is :D That's why America's so spiffy! *huggles America* eeeehehehe

2006-07-13 [Charybdis]: That looks like it was a lot of fun! o_o

2006-07-14 [Lady of Lore]: it was ^^ especially since the Korean singer dressed as a pirate, lol ^_^

2006-07-15 [someelf]: I found out the stuff I need is right here >_<

2006-07-16 [Nite_Owl]: whoa, all the houses look the same (O,o) kinda creepy

2006-07-16 [Jitter]: They're build the same style but if you look closely nothing is like the other!

2006-07-16 [Nite_Owl]: yeah that's true :D still kinda creepy that they're all the same color though haha especially compared to America

2006-07-16 [Jitter]: Indeed :p But town are usually like that, this is a village although to the residents of the island it's a city :D

2006-07-17 [sequeena_rae]: Oh wow, that's stunning [Jitter]! :D

2006-07-17 [Ocean Soul]: Huh yes, it is :o Really great photo!!

2006-07-17 [sequeena_rae]: I think the sky is the best part *has a thing for skies* o.o

2006-07-17 [Charybdis]: Woooow o_o That looks just like a postcard! A gorgeous postcard too ^____^ I love the buildings... has that colour scheme always been used? You see illustrations of ancient Hellenic architecture, and they often have the same orange-and-white.

2006-07-17 [Jitter]: Heheh well that's more like Greek folklor than ancient greece style. It's the island houses, orange roofs white walls. Everyone still paints their houses this way and only blue ultramarine is every now and then added :) Thank you all for the nice comments ^_^ That was the view from our hotel room. Pity I couldn't take night pictures it was lovely *melts*

2006-07-17 [Charybdis]: I bet it was ^^ Do people paint their houses this way out of habit? :p Like, if you wanted to have a house in magenta and a blue/green the colour of toothpaste, would anybody stop you? x)

2006-07-18 [sequeena_rae]: Why? Is that your dream house [Charybdis]? XP

2006-07-18 [someelf]: What I've heard. They paint their houses white because of the heat. How would you feel if you lived in a dark blue coloured house with around 40 C? :p

2006-07-18 [Charybdis]: No, but it was the dream house of someone across from my old elementary school :P // Hmm, maybe ^^

2006-07-18 [sequeena_rae]: Hehehehe XD

2006-07-18 [someelf]: Thihi :3

2006-07-18 [Charybdis]: It had dark teal trim too xD

2006-07-18 [sequeena_rae]: *had to look at that picture twice* I was going to say Atay, Wales has nothing to do with parking XD But I get it now XP

2006-07-18 [Atayemi]: XD Hehe..so it's fine, then? :P *will remove if it doesn't fit the theme* ;)

2006-07-18 [iippo]: o.O Why, is parking bad in Wales?

2006-07-18 [sequeena_rae]: ;) It's great :P // I don't know, but I imagine that parking just doesn't fit Wales at all XD

2006-07-18 [Atayemi]: Ohh good good! :P //It's because it's near the sea, and I doubt that owners of cars would like their cars to be swept away with the sea when the tide comes in. XD

2006-07-18 [sequeena_rae]: Heheheh very true, Welsh weather has a habit of being very unpredictable XD

2006-07-18 [Atayemi]: XD haha yes! But it's too hot now..if it was raining, we'd be moaning about it. >_>

2006-07-18 [sequeena_rae]: The weather doesn't win, no matter what it does :P

2006-07-18 [Atayemi]: You're right there. *nods* XD

2006-07-18 [sequeena_rae]: Hehehehe XD We should move this to messages me thinks xD you know what we're like :P we're like old women xD

2006-07-18 [Atayemi]: XD yes, we are a tad. Alrighty then. *doesn't want to spam* XD

2006-07-18 [sequeena_rae]: hehehe XD

2006-07-18 [Atayemi]: :)

2006-07-24 [Charybdis]: That's quite an impressive view your city has ^^ What is its population, by the way?

2006-07-24 [sequeena_rae]: Wow, very very cool mountain :D

2006-07-25 [Magdalena Snow]: the population of Anchorage is around 300,000 people. it's little more than half the population of the entire state of Alaska. The city itself is almost all in that photo, which I took while climbing another mountain! we have lots of mountains up here. And if you want to know more about Mount Susitna, there's actually a Native Alaskan folk tale about it. I can't really tell it, but I'm sure you can find the story online somewhere... ^_^

2006-07-25 [Magdalena Snow]: in fact, I recommend this site: http://d21c.com/Alyaska/SleepingLadysLegend.html

2006-07-26 [iippo]: I don't really get dew_farie's entry... :$ Maybe it's because I've never been to Louisiana. :/

2006-07-26 [Ocean Soul]: I don't get it either..

2006-07-26 [iippo]: We're too European XD

2006-07-26 [Ocean Soul]: I guess.. we should get some European insiders up then :p

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: [dew_farie]'s entry, although completely confusing to me is hillarious XD // and [Ocean Soul] that picture is so lovely o.o

2006-07-26 [dayah]: I so want to go to Germany...:)

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: Me too o.o

2006-07-26 [Ocean Soul]: Duh why.. just because of the castles? ;)

2006-07-26 [Jitter]: Castles, and getting Samsas Traum merchandise :p

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: ...Would it make me a bad person if I said yes? XD

2006-07-26 [Jitter]: *giggles*

2006-07-26 [Ocean Soul]: Nope.. actually castles are cool :P But you don't get all excited anymore after being surrounded by them all your life ;)

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: It'll get me away from the sea though XP

2006-07-26 [Ocean Soul]: Yea, that's true. Castles stand on hills and not on the beach xD

2006-07-26 [Jitter]: I want to live in a castle >.<

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: Unless we're talking about Sand castles :D XD

2006-07-26 [Ocean Soul]: Oy, I want to live in a castle, too. Maybe not all my life, but for some time.. that would be kinda nice.

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: I'm a Queen so I should be allowed :O XD

2006-07-26 [Jitter]: I've heard that in Skotland it's cheaper to live in a castle than a hotel!

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: It is? *needs to get to Scotland* God damn.

2006-07-26 [Ocean Soul]: Talking about the Queen.. you have castles in GB! You even have a royal family ;)

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: We also have a Palace :O

2006-07-26 [Ocean Soul]: We have palaces, too :P In my favorite town, there's a castle and a palace x) <img50*0:http://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/museum/residenz.GIF> <img50*0:http://www.chr.mergler.bnv-bamberg.de/bamberg/franken-bilder/wuerzburg_innenansicht_der_residenz.jpg> <img50*0:http://www.uni-wuerzburg.de/philfakIII/img/res.gif> :3 That's the former arch bishop's palace and it's really beautiful :)

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: OMG I think yours is better than ours o.o

2006-07-26 [Ocean Soul]: Church people.. they know what's good ;)

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: Indeed o.o *wants*

2006-07-26 [Ocean Soul]: Mhh.. I don't :P It's too huge.. the cleaning would kill me :P

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: *Knows of a castle by the sea* just east of here :P though it's also on a hill. There's a castle in Durham which some of the students (of that college) live in - but it isn't all that glamorous, because the rooms have been divded up and so they're tiny. As well as the fact that most people who apply to castle college don't get to live in it anyway since there's too many of em X)

2006-07-26 [Jitter]: If you could afford sth like that you'd have smeone else to clean it for you ;p

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: Definitely o.o // *wants to go to Durham*

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: *loves Durham* I'm leaving in September, after 4 years ;_;

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: Last year at Uni?

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Yeah. 3 years undergraduate, and a 1 year postgraduate (since I wanted to stay so much!). I'll still be visiting from time to time for the next year or two to see bf and friends though.

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: <URL:img/photo/36175_1096219938.jpg> - thats the only pic of the castle I've got uploaded, and not a great one. But got a few on my latest film I think.

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: Wow, expensive much? XD

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Yah well, that's what student loan's for ;)

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: Indeed they are! XD But I'm going to study in Wales so it costs half as much xD

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Oooh neat! I guess Durham'll be a lot more expensive after this year too, with top-up fees. But at the same time, you don't have to pay them till after you graduate and are earning.

2006-07-26 [sequeena_rae]: Which is good. Imagine trying to pay all that money each year? >_< I can't wait to go to Uni next year :D

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: How much does it cost you to go to university over there?

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Erm... *searches through papers* Fees at undergraduate are (or were) around over $1000 per year in England. But with top-up fees (which I'm not sure if it effects all universities) it'll be more like £3000 per year - which is standard postgrad fees (since none gets payed by the local education authority people). Accomodation fees vary on the place.

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: What are top-up fees? o_O Kind of like student services, added on top of tuition?

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: They're the new tuition fees, replacing the old system, and they're definitely being brought in in Durham since its been made a big deal of here (though doesn't affect current students), and other places, though don't know how many. In a big way they're supposed to bring more money into academia, and the underpaid lecturers (which the strikes for most of this year centred around >> ). But the idea is you don't have to pay them till after you leave and are earning over a certain amount, same as with paying off a student loan.

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: Oh, okay ^^ What do you think of the idea?

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Hmm well, most people are opposed to it since it effectively triples what a 3-year undergrad student would have to pay in fees. And that's before living costs, accom, food etc. There's no doubt help available for those in 'reduced circumstances' as they put it - at the moment some people have their whole tuition payed by their lea, or part of it. That might reduce if they didn't need to pay it till afterwards? And after a degree nearly everyone has a student loan of £3000+/year to pay off too, so overall it's seen as a negative thing putting students into even more debt (I believe the motion only passed in the commons by one vote).

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: I can see the reasons for it too though, academics are shockingly underpaid (as long as they get the pay rises they've been promised). And if it goes back into the universities that's a good thing overall... though it won't be visible for some years. It might mean less people going to university, which I don't necessarily think is a bad thing. But another worry is the institutions involved will become more elitist and higher-class because of the potential costs. (though again, as you don't pay them till after, it maybe shouldn't have such a reason to as it might otherwise)

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Eek long comments ^^'

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: That's good, it shows you know what you're talking about ^^ Eesh, it passed by one vote? o_o I can see how it'd be controversial... I'm surprised we don't have a similar debate over here, frankly; even if I were paying tuition at the university I'll be attending in the fall (I don't, since my father works there, but anyway) it would still come out to barely 2500$ for the year, not counting room and board. It's not like that for all students - I was just lucky, since I'm Canadian and from the same province as my uni - but even so I can't see how schools can keep running with fees that small. And academics are just as underpaid here... or if they aren't underpaid, they are understaffed,

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: meaning that they are overworked, which essentially comes out to the same thing. My father was on sabbatical last spring, but in the years before that it seemed like he had to spend more time at school than at home...

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: And on another topic, I can see your point about it not being a bad thing if university enrolment went down somewhat. It's probably the same for you - over here people are worrying about a shortage of capable specialists in the trades, like plumbers or electricians. You're expected to go to university, and becoming a welder or whatever is seen as somehow, I don't know, not as respectable. As a result, we're getting loads of young lawyers and business(wo)men, but fewer people trained in the jobs that don't require years of higher education, like carpentry or something.

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Well, previous to this universities really make most of their money from postgrads / phds. And international students (which a lot of postgrads are, at least here). This puts things on level more, but even so, I only heard recently the university was in some debt and has been for some time o_O (maybe not in a big way compared to their full budget, it's hard to judge when you don't know all the figures). And it's not so uncommon either, but not something you think about as a student (when you've got enough money worries to be worrying about!). :( I can imagine that, the academics I know and know of seem to work long / extra hours, and that's the norm rather than the exception in their line :/

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Partly that, though there has been initiatives recently to offer those sort of vocational subjects in school for those really not interested in further education, and to give them more of a chance. But also, it's the governments obsession to get as many people as possible into university, whether the individual really should or not. Hence the value of a degree goes down, and there are some unis (which everyone knows about) which aren't serious enough that they should honestly stay open at all - except for the fact there's people to go in them. So in a lot of ways *where* you studied can make a big difference too.

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: Exactly - a bachelor's degree isn't enough anymore, as often as not. With such a large pool of grads floating around looking for jobs, people can afford to pick and choose, and will tend to dismiss anyone with anything less than a Master's. And the government... I'm unwilling to generalise, since I respect what they do, but sometimes I wonder how real things are to them. A high percentage of university grads looks good on paper, but it's not always the best way to go.

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: *nods* One reason I'm studying for my second. The graduate job market is so competative o_O . I'm not a fan of people who blindly bash the government for everything either (watch me look like a hypocrite now X) ) - but targets, yeah. Not always a good idea. It's the same thing in schools, they want everyone to be getting more gcses and a-levels, and then when more do the exams are accused of getting easier. A lose-lose situation really.

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: I should probably shush now before the other 20 watchers get bored to death by the conversation. ^^'

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: Bah. I won't kick you off for chatting in the comments :p And the watchers will be checking anyway, as they would have if only one comment had been made. No harm done ^^

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: This is true, I'm chatting with the owner so can't get in too much trouble ;) There was an interesting programme on ch4 a while ago, might've been called 'That'll Teach em', which took a bunch of gcse students and put them in an old-style boarding school (complete with old exams).

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: Grah, I deleted my comment instead of editing it x) and yeah, I promise I won't sic a horde of angry photographers on you anytime soon :D

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: Ha! I would have loved to have seen that! How did it go?

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Hehe... done that before. Well, I read it :)

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: Didn't watch the whole series, but several of the straight-A students were dissapointed by their drops in grades (though the good ones still passed, not as highly as they did in their real exams). It may have been done in the summer after their gcses, though can't remember.

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: That doesn't surprise me. Some of the questions on the email forward I mentioned were on subjects that are still briefly discussed today, but not in anywhere near as much detail. Points of grammar that you may hear the name of but not really know much about, history questions far more specific than "who was the first prime minister?", geography questions dealing with something other than the water cycle or the cardinal points... *shakes head* It makes you wonder how much we really know.

2006-07-26 [shotokan_gal]: It does. Though at the same time where education's left some areas behind, it's moved on in others. I don't think people (well, kids) make such an effort to learn things on their own anymore though, maybe (*gasp*) out of school time. Certainly the jump from school to university I found absolutely huge. In terms of how much more you had to learn, take in, and know. A lot more intensive. Puts how little you learnt at school into some perspective too.

2006-07-26 [Charybdis]: True enough. School is now pretty much taken for granted, which it wasn't back then when it wasn't a given at all. Since people know they'll be learning stuff whether they want to or not, why bother doing it on their own time? If it were a privilege to attend school, or if it were like those places in poorer countries where education is truly valued, I think people who seek out knowledge on their own more often. ^^

2006-07-27 [iippo]: It's psychological, isn't it. Kids are told "you have to go to school" so obviously their reaction is "I don't wanna, it's stupid!" And if you went "you don't get to go to school, you should do something else", then the kid would want to go to school. (I used to be like that. My brother went to school two years before I did, I couldn't understand why I wasn't allowed to go too - I always went where ever he did. So when I was finally allowed to go to school, I really wanted to, too.)

2006-07-27 [shotokan_gal]: 10 entries :D

2006-07-27 [5thwitch]: ta-daaah

2006-07-27 [shotokan_gal]: Ooh, that first one of yours [spincrus] reminds me of some of the Mosques / Churches I saw in Spain - with a mix of styles where one had been converted to the other in some cases.

2006-07-27 [spincrus]: :D The Hagia Sophia was built as a church first, then converted into a mosque, and then when the Republic of Turkey was founded by Ataturk, he converted it into a museum saying "it'd be better off when converted into neutral grounds to please both sides".

2006-07-27 [5thwitch]: I know, Ataturk had good ideas....

2006-07-27 [shotokan_gal]: Ah, the Mezquita (sp?) in Cordoba was the other way around, though seems to be largely a tourist attraction now too. That's a diplomatic leader! And I see the contest's closed now, lots of really diverse entries :)

2006-07-27 [Charybdis]: The building itself is absolutely stunning, even without taking into consideration its colourful history. I'd love to visit it sometime ^____^

2006-07-27 [spincrus]: And considering it was like a last, "unlawful" entry, it is more stunning, isn't it? :P

2006-07-27 [Charybdis]: Yes, it is. Though the ten-entry deadline was set before there were many entries, so I think we could probably have made fifteen before closing... we have one extra as it is ^^ It's going to be terrible to pick favourites, absolutely terrible x_X

2006-07-27 [spincrus]: *evil laughter*

2006-07-27 [Charybdis]: Your sympathy is truly touching :P

2006-07-27 [5thwitch]: you, outlaw! XD

2006-07-27 [spincrus]: Oh, I've just noticed I'm a finalist in the Paranormal Photos competition :D

2006-07-27 [shotokan_gal]: Is there going to be a public poll Chary? *can't pick either*. Hehe... my pic made the mainstreet poll too for the first time ever ^^ even if it's losing... I'm amazed to have made top 6 (it's not like it's that good!).

2006-07-27 [Charybdis]: Good for you! ^^ I couldn't believe the massive number of entries that one got. The initial poll was a monster x)

2006-07-27 [spincrus]: Considering they were chosen from about a million entries, it's amazing! It made me happy ^^

2006-07-27 [Charybdis]: Squee and I are going to pick a favourite, then the rest of the entries will go into a public poll to decide on 1-2-3 finishes. Perhaps a multipoll would be best? :)

2006-07-27 [shotokan_gal]: Yours was one of my favs spin ^^ Quite different. And it was definitely hard to choose, there were so many.

2006-07-27 [Charybdis]: It's quite amazing at that - I don't believe we've ever had so many people enter an official contest before, and that's saying something o_o Perhaps the paranormal theme struck a chord with more people, given that this is a scifi/fantasy community, but even so.. o_o

2006-07-27 [spincrus]: Thanks for the compliment :D // I think just about any photo with something weird on it could be qualified as "paranormal" and everyone with a camera entered.

2006-07-27 [Charybdis]: Perhaps, but then there was the water theme, and anyone with running water could have done the same sort of thing :P I think you're right, though. But some of them were a bit odd xD

2006-07-28 [shotokan_gal]: The first photo comp, 'tis the season' I think, had quite a lot of entries. 4 pages maybe. Though didn't have to vote on them back then not being council.

2006-07-28 [Charybdis]: Quite possibly. I don't remember either ^^;;

2006-07-28 [sequeena_rae]: Eeeeeeeee! Lotsa entries :D

2006-07-28 [sequeena_rae]: Go vote for your favourites at: Nationalities Photography Contest - Voting ;)

2006-07-28 [Ocean Soul]: Mh.. any reason why my photo isn't listed? :(

2006-07-28 [Charybdis]: *pokes* Look at the main page :P

2006-07-28 [Ocean Soul]: Oh jeez! I complain and I didn't even realize that I won :P I'm dumby.. that's what you get from not watching the mainpage -_-

2006-07-28 [Jitter]: lol grats Franzi :)

2006-07-28 [Ocean Soul]: Thank you :3 Soo.. now everyone will come here and visit me, right? As a price? =3

2006-07-28 [Jitter]: haha I wish.. Germany is one of my 'To go' countries x)

2006-07-28 [Ocean Soul]: Mhh *invites*

2006-07-28 [Charybdis]: Can I come? :D Actually my parents just got back, and I didn't get to go to Bremen to visit friends with them ._.

2006-07-28 [Ocean Soul]: Mh sure :D Bremen, huh? How come you have friends in Bremen? =D

2006-07-28 [Jitter]: *goes*

2006-07-28 [Charybdis]: Whee :p They come to Canada once every couple of years. We met them when they came to our church, years ago ^^ We even spent Christmas with them when I was five, since my dad took a sabbatical and we all went to France ^__^ That was before they were in Bremen though. I think they lived somewhere around Cologne? In any case, we still correspond, and when my parents went to Germany a month or so ago they spent a good part of that time in Bremen with them ^^ I've seen loads of pictures. It's a lovely place ^^

2006-07-29 [Ocean Soul]: Never been to Bremen actually, but I think it really is a nice place. Many cities are uite nice, and Bremen is not one of these extremely modern and boring ones ;)

2006-07-29 [Charybdis]: That was the impression I got too. My friends' house looks almost like a hobbit-hole actually :P

2006-07-29 [Jitter]: haha hobbit hole? :D

2006-07-29 [Charybdis]: Well, kind of x) It has a low sloping thatched roof, and one of those doors with the top half missing that looks hobbity even if it's not round. It's not actually in a hill, but it looks like it should be :P

2006-07-29 [Jitter]: hehehe

2006-07-29 [Charybdis]: Even the rooms inside are laid out in a hobbity pattern - an old barn was actually transplanted from somewhere else and put around the original house, and the space created between the two walls has turned into a set of rooms that come off the main corridor x)
